Description
Topic: Case Research and Precedent Analysis in the AI age
Rationale:
In today’s courtroom and boardroom, the speed and quality of your research are a competitive advantage or a costly liability. Worried you’re playing catch-up to first-year associates who can Google faster? This course flips the script: you won’t just “find cases.” You’ll architect a repeatable research engine that turns every issue into a defensible, memo-ready conclusion in record time, shrinking billable hours and elevating advocacy.
Course description:
This session treats research as a craft under pressure. You’ll deconstruct a complex issue into a lean research plan, debunk common cribbing mistakes, and build a defensible memo framework that holds up under cross-examination and opposing counsel critique. You’ll leave with a living precedent map, a one-page IRAC-ready memo outline, and a citations protocol you can deploy across matters—reducing risk, increasing confidence, and reclaiming time.
Modules:
1) Frame the research question and success criteria
2) Efficient search strategies and credible sources (case law databases, secondary sources)
3) Analyzing and synthesizing precedents (issue spotting, treatment, distinguishing facts)
4) Memo template: issue, rule, analysis, conclusion (IRAC) + citation sheet
5) Live mini-research exercise: participants draft a memo outline from a sample fact pattern
Learning outcomes / deliverables:
Produce IRAC-based memo outline for a provided issue
A template for a rapid-source map and a citations checklist
